Over the coming years we’ll see more than 5,000 new jobs created within the logistics and distribution sector as a number of major new developments start to move off the drawing board.
St Helens is taking advantage of its ideal location as a centre for logistics, with over 375,448 square metres of logistics and industrial developments approved and under consideration within 12 months. Positioned on the M6. M62 and A580 places St Helens in the heart of the northern logistics catchment area, the St Helens M6 growth corridor. Major operators like Co-op, Sainsbury’s and Booker have been based here for some time, whilst the key assets of Haydock Industrial Estate and the Parkside development will further increase opportunity. The Parkside site will benefit from direct access on to the M6 and Trans-Pennine rail line, creating a large scale logistics centre, and providing ample opportunity for companies looking to locate here.
Relevant skills are also available in the local market with the logistics sector seeing a 330% increase in enrolments on to Warehousing and Distribution further education courses across the City Region between 2012 and 2016. This is alongside the launch of a new Northern Logistics Academy at St Helens College, has been specifically set up to provide a pipeline of skilled people to service the growing logistics sector. As part of this academy students can study for the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) qualification – helping to ensure workers have the right training and qualifications to operate at a world class level.
